It could have been better March 14, 2010 Temperance (Pittsburgh, PA USA) I have read my fair share of fantasy novels. As my best friend knows, who got me Twilight for my birthday. Just to put it out there, the book wasn't bad over all, however, there were some annoying aspects.
To start with, the undeveloped character irritated me. I don't want to place myself in the book. No, I want a character I can relate to from her struggles to her love and everything else in-between. I found it hard to even like her at points. Bella being dependent on men was another down fall to her personality. She doesn't need to be a feminist, but some back bone would be nice because of how woman are more independent now. Second, Edward, oh, Edward, the author overly did the adjectives in this book. As a reader, I know he is good looking I do not want to be reminded time after time. To me, Edward is over controlling and reminds me of a story I'd see on lifetime about a girl and her overprotective boyfriend (In the end, the girl is killed).
In addition, I don't believe in their love. It wasn't real to me. I have never met a guy and within a few months knew he was the one for me. Even after a few years, I still questioned. The books connection to Romeo and Juliet is puzzling. I found the play a tragedy, but Twilight is hardly that.
Finally, guys loving Bella just to love her was over the top. No non-self-esteem teen has guys all over her. Guys notice that and don't like it.
Overall, the book was captivating and interesting. I found some of the folktales to be wrong, which is disappointing. Especially, since in those folktales there were never vampires because that's a European thing.
If you want a fun read, it's a good book. However, if you are looking for more I'd find something else.
Maybe next time... March 13, 2010 Aubrey M. Tate (Arlington, TX) I will admit I did enjoy this book, to an extent. It was the only book of the series that I enjoyed because it focused on their relationship. However she loses that focus and takes no risks in the series. So I have very little respect for Meyer's writing, very very poor. My comments go much more in depth in the following book reviews because they get worse and worse in quality.
Twilight March 12, 2010 Lora Leuzinger (Dublin, OH United States) I'm sure I'll be duplicating some of the reviews, but I had to add my love of these books. I, like so many, thought these were books for teenagers and ignored the series completely for the longest time. My friend said she started to read them and encouraged me to try the first one just to see. We both have kids in elementary school so we aren't the "target audience", although I truly believe these books aren't YA. (Stephenie even said herself that the first one was never written that way, it is just the genre they got put into.)
So, I began reading, and began falling in love with this story. There are a few words that get repeated too often and there are even typos here and there, but it didn't matter. You get to step into another world and learn all about these wonderful characters with Stephenie's fantastic descriptions. And you literally feel the passion going on between them!
I've seen the first movie, but will not see any more. There is just no comparison since there is soooo much more in the books. I have read all four books (and the Midnight Sun draft online) and would say Twilight is my favorite of the published ones in this series. But I love each one since it continues the story. It will be hard to find something better, but I hope to find other books as good.
Twilight FTW. March 12, 2010 Richard Calder (Utah) 0 out of 2 found this review helpful
I read this book and i got to say this is one of the best books in the world. If you like to read books you must read Twilight. The story never lets you go and i like the way is tolled. Not many books have this way of telling its story.
Amazing Book!! March 12, 2010 L. Branham (Ky. USA) 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
I have to admit I've held off on reading this series for a long time. I had mixed feelings about it. I thought it wouldn't be very good and since it was a YA (young adult) novel I thought it wouldn't hold my interest. I finally broke down and started reading it, boy was I wrong! Stephanie Meyer is an excellent author she truly amazes me. I felt like I was right there with the characters and I could feel every emotion they had. I hated to see the book end although they are fairly long I was longing for them to be even longer than they were. I didn't want them to end. All the books in the series are terrific! I was so unhappy when I finished the last book because I had no more to read. I really miss the characters and being so absorbed in the books. I hope she writes another one soon. I just can't believe it took me so long to enjoy this series. I'm in my mid 30's and I thought the books were wonderful please don't miss out!! You can enjoy them at any age.
