Age Inappropriate! January 23, 2010 F. Cage (East Coast USA) 1 out of 2 found this review helpful
I would have given it zero stars if I could.
My daughter (11) was flipping through this magazine and I decided to see what it was about. WoW, I thought I was reading a young adult magazine. Publishers "Girls Life Acquisition Corporation" if your reading this not all parents are to busy to ignore what their kids are doing. If this is the type of trash you let your young daughters read you need to work on your parenting skills. My daugther has been raised properly and does not need the degenerate morals of todays current entertainment/society snuck in on her by a magazine that says its for ages 10+. Sure there a many many parents out there who don't parent anymore but I'm not one of them. Your trash is no longer welcome in our house.
too much information for a 9 to 12 year old! January 23, 2010 Anita Schlarmann 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
This magazine is is too old for my nine year old. One of the articles discuss Breast enhancing cream. I do not want my daughter obsessing about her breast size at this age. Theres too much pressure on young girls as it is about how they look. It should be talking about who they are on the inside not how big their boobs are and if they need enhancing cream. What are you thinking!
age inappropriate January 16, 2010 M. Kerr 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
The target audience for this magazine is way off base. On the Girl's Life Magazine website, they tout this magazine as for 10-15 year olds. My daughter received this magazine as a Christmas gift. When she received her first issue (Feb/March)I was appalled at the content. The Dear Carol feature had a girl "writing in" about having unprotected sex. Another girl "wrote" in about a guy friend that wants to be friends with benefits. Maybe I'm naive, but I'd like to think that this is not material for the majority of 10-14 year olds. Please seriously review the content of this magazine before purchasing.
For young women, not girls! December 21, 2009 J. Arena (Williamsburg, VA) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
This is not at all a bad magazine, but make no mistake -- it is not for ten year olds! One would certainly hope that little girls are not yet interested in "what boys really want," and getting a good "bikini body." Parents -- don't choose this magazine for a child!
Aside from the publisher's mis-information regarding the target audience, this is an entertaining and fun magazine for high school or young college girls. Of course, it's heavy on the advertisements, but those are the advertisements for all the stuff that teens are interested in. When I read teen magazines as a kid, I drooled over those ads for stuff I dreamed about having! It was just fun, and didn't warp my perception of reality or my position in the world. Don't mistake this for literature or high art -- this is just a little brain candy and fluff to pass the time. As that -- it's a sure hit as a gift for the teen in your life!
Recommended as a fun distraction for your busy, stressed and overworked teens!
GL: Seriously Confused on Age Ranges July 28, 2009 5 out of 6 found this review helpful
I first got GL last year as a 13th birthday gift. As a homeschooler for the past few years, I find it most interesting for its unwittingly revealing information about the life of the "average" girl today.
One of the best examples is the magazine's handling of boys. Their usual topics (such as kissing, understanding your "BF", and "getting the guy") are not healthy for most 10-year-old girls to be spending their time thinking about. For 13 and up, it may be interesting and helpful. However, it deserves a caution for parents concerned about this.
Another common topic is fashion. While I did not find the clothing objectionable (although very expensive!), the makeup is far overdone. They dedicate at least a page per issue on all things makeup, be it eyeshadow or lip gloss or eyeliner or even foundation. The use of eyeshadow on the models is ridiculous - they can best be compared to traffic lights.
The focus on celebrities is maddening. Every issue has yet another "star" on it, and the magazine's favorite myth is "Celebrities: They're Just Like You!" Talented people can be great role models. However, they often have to deal with different issues and lead different lives. Why not feature more "wholesome" role models?
The last complaint is their frequent use of "teen speak". The entire thing is barely decipherable to my esteemed mother. For me, it was difficult at first - rather like learning another language. Their use of BF for boyfriend, BFF/bestie for best friend, and 'rent for parent barely is the tip of the iceberg. It does considerably abate once one leaves the Fashion section, after which they adopt a less perky and annoying tone.
I do commend GL for its handling of tough topics. I never got one about teen pregnancy, but it did have important subjects such as depression, relationship abuse, and drug abuse. Appropriate for 10-year-olds? Probably not. But for the 13-and-up crowd, it's crucial stuff.
Also good is their "Healthy You" program. It doesn't cover losing weight, but just staying in shape and eating healthy. This isn't as good for younger girls, but good habits are never too early.
BOTTOM LINE: Girls' Life really depends on your outlook on parenting and what is healthy for your daughter. Many parents may find that 10-and-up is more along the lines of 13-and-up. I encourage prospective subscribers to take a look at the website: [...]. It offers a lot of insight on the paper-and-ink form. I hope Girls' Life can improve and become a more healthy and helpful source for many girls.
